"A New York City Apartment Goes From Dark and Cramped to Daring and Capacious."
Originally built in 1925, the apartment was completely gut renovated and redesigned by Stewart-Schafer. The homeowners wanted to increase the value of the apartment and desired a more usable, modern space for living and entertaining. Stewart-Schafer maximized the 3,000 square foot home with an open floor plan, and infused the home with clean lines, luxurious finishes, and a delicate blend of contemporary minimalism and European influences. James and Christine replaced all of the flooring, gut renovated the kitchen, created a custom marble countertop with an inset drying rack, and added a storage closet to create a larger footprint and hide the appliances. They created custom cabinets in the kitchen and living room, and added all new appliances including two full-size wine fridges. To add value to the home, Stewart-Schafer removed a wall to create a third bedroom rather than a den. In addition to the architecture and design for the project, James and Christine built and designed many of the furnishings including a custom shelving unit, light fixtures, and seating. The end result is a tailored home that is open, inviting, and updated for today’s living.
